A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Jhajjar district in Haryana on Thursday morning, sending strong tremors across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and surrounding areas, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The quake occurred at 9:04 AM IST at a shallow depth of 10 km, with the epicentre located at 28.63°N latitude and 76.68°E longitude, the NCS reported in a post on X.
Residents across the National Capital Region reported feeling strong tremors, with many stepping out of buildings in alarm. No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been confirmed so far.
This is not the first seismic activity this year. On February 17, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake had jolted the region at 5:36 AM, with its epicentre located just 9 km east of New Delhi, at a depth of 5 km, according to NCS data.
Delhi falls under Seismic Zone IV, as per the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, classifying it as a “High Damage Risk Zone.” This means the capital is prone to moderate to severe earthquakes, underscoring the need for earthquake-resilient infrastructure and emergency preparedness.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and follow standard safety protocols during seismic events.
